Tangipahoa Parish is more than 800 square miles and has a population of approximately 132,000 residents. The Hammond metropolitan statistical area was recently recognized as the fast-growing area in Louisiana. The vast majority of that growth is occurring in the Robert and Bedico area of the parish. However, the growth is having effects throughout the parish.
Tangipahoa Parish is a beautiful place to live and raise a family while also benefiting from its close proximity to both New Orleans and Baton Rouge, as a result our parish will continue to grow. The parish government and its indepent agnecies and boards must work as a team to prepare for the continued growth. Part of preparing for that growth is having a smart growth plan that both wlecomes new residents and development while perserving our natural resources and rural lifestyle.
As our parish continues to grow our infrastructure and parish services will continue to be pushed to its limits. It is the responsibility of the various parish agencies and government entities to plan and prepare for this growth in order to reduce the stress on the system and prevent overdevelopment. The resources needed for the parish to plan and prepare for this growth come from property tax and sales tax. While property taxes provide some funding for parish services, the majority of parish and school funding is provided by the sales tax.
Over the course of the campaign I will be adding my ideas on how to increase our sales tax revenues without raising the sales tax rate. I will be addressing economic development while protecting our wildlife and our environment. Ideas on how the parish can continue to improve our infrastructure including, roadways, public water service, public sewage service, and a comprehensive drainage plan.
